A native of Kerala, Priyadarshan
started off as a student in his mentor Appachan’s Navodaya Studio in Kerala. In
1983, M Mani gave him the break as the scenarist in his Malayalam film Kuyiline
Thedi. His first film as director was the Malayalam film Oodarathummava
Aalariyam. His forte was comedy themes.
Gradually, he shifted to musicals and psychological dramas. In 1984, he joined
hands with Malayalam cinema’s megastar Mohanlal and directed his second film
titled Poochakkoru Mookuthi. After tasting success in this venture, the duo did
more blockbuster hits like Thalavattam and Chithram in 1986 and Kilukkam in
1988. His 1984 hit Thenmavin Kombath was remade into Tamil as Muthu with
Rajnikanth in the lead role.
Priyadarshan shifted to Tamil films and made an offbeat romance film with
Karthik and Bhanupriya in the lead roles in 1991 titled Gopura Vasalile...[
